Joan Kennedy, of Bowie, Md., passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2018. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, 3 brothers and 1 child. Beloved mother of Kevin, Diane and Paul. Treasured grandmother of 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was born in 1932 in New York City where she spent her formative years and received her education. In 1952, Joan married Paul Kennedy. From 1952 until 1963 they lived in New York. During that time, Joan had 2 children, Kevin and Diane. In 1963, the family relocated to Maryland. In 1965, the family moved to Bowie where several years later she had her youngest child, Paul. Joan loved being at the beach, loved to dance, liked playing cards, enjoyed camping, and was an excellent bowler. Joan was her happiest when surrounded by family -- many to whom she showed kindness, compassion, and open arms -- even when it required sacrifice. She taught her children not to pre-judge anyone, to always respect others and to make time for the important things. Unbeknownst to others, she sent a handwritten letter every day to her eldest grandson while he was in Iraq. That's who she was in life and how she will be remembered. In her later years, Joan's daughter, Diane, cared for her every need. Earlier this month, Joan was hospitalized after feeling ill. Following a brief stay, she was placed in hospice care. She died peacefully, without discomfort, and surrounded by family. She will live in the memories of those who were touched by her love. We are the lucky ones for having known her despite the profound sadness her passing has caused. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation toward Alzheimer's research or to your local Hospice (there are Angels among us).Mom, you did your job. It's OK to rest.
