On Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Mary J. Harney passed away in her home peacefully at the age of 93 surrounded by family. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to the late Bridget (nee Donovan) and Thomas Daley, she was raised in South Boston. She and her late husband, Robert Edwin Harney (d. 2008) moved to Maryland in 1961 settling in Lanham. She was the loving mother of two daughters, Marianne Harney of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Janet Woolery (Benjamin) of Bowie, MD as well as a son who died at birth. Devoted sister of the late Elizabeth Berry and Thomas, Francis and Lawrence Daley, she leaves behind six grandchildren, Michelle Smith, Elaina Serrant, Caitlin Hart all of North Carolina and Shannon Englehart, Eric and Bridget Woolery all of Maryland. She was blessed with six great-grandchildren, Makayla, Kaiyah, Lanie, Leland, Landen and Elijah as well as her dear nieces and nephews.
She and her husband’s love of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which began on their honeymoon in 1959, prompted a move to Kitty Hawk in 1998. Eventually, they split their time between the beach and a condo at Somerset Park in Bowie.
She was employed early in her career at the Social Security Administration. In addition, she worked at the Wells/Linson M-NCPPC complex, Perskie Photographics and volunteered for Edward Kennedy’s senatorial office. Her hobbies included sewing, especially ice skating costumes for her daughters, and shopping, always in the pursuit of a bargain. She will be dearly missed.
