Frank John Colgan

September 27, 1925 — February 16, 2018

Frank John Colgan, 92, of Annapolis Maryland (previously a long-term resident of Brighton, New York), passed away at home on February 16, 2018 surrounded by family.  Frank was born on September 27, 1925 in Rochester New York.  He briefly attended Duke University’s pre-medical program but withdrew to join the Army Reserve and take advantage of the Army Specialized Training program. The next two and a half years were spent as a rifleman in the US Army 346th Infantry.  During his tour of duty, Frank was deployed in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge.  After the war, Frank traveled around Europe on his motorcycle and was the leader of a big band that featured Frank on clarinet.  After returning to the States, Frank spent time as a laborer in Alaska before continuing his education.  He graduated Hobart College and The University of Rochester Medical School.  Frank was a professor at the University of Rochester Medical School in the department of Anesthesiology for more than 30 years.   Frank met Margaret Thomson at the University of Rochester during medical school. They married in 1952 and had five children.  Frank was a passionate sailor of Thistles, JYs and Sunfish at the Rochester Canoe Club.  He volunteered his time as Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 199, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, and transporting those who were unable to drive, to and from medical appointments.  Frank was a friend to all he met. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David, and sister Jean. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, brothers John Colgan and Richard Colgan, both of Rochester,  his children: Peter (Susan) Colgan, Stephen (Karen) Colgan, Ann Purcell (Robert Ramsay), Paul Colgan, Barbara (Michael) Goyette, 11 grandchildren, and 1 great grandson.  Frank's children can not express how thankful we are to his wonderful caregivers, who are now family.  He loved you all.
