Phyllis Kathryn Dorn, nee Thorne, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018. She was surrounded by her family.Phyllis was born in December of 1930. She was the daughter of Bessie Marie Thorne (Smith) and Wallace Edwin Thorne of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She was the second of their five children. Phyllis was a 1948 graduate of Marlboro High School. After high school she went to work as a secretary at the CIA in Washington, DC.In 1952/53 at a New Year's Eve party, she met Gordon L. Dorn. Gordon is from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and was enlisted in the United States Army stationed at Fort Myers, Virginia. In February of 1955, Phyllis and Gordon were married at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.After the wedding, they were stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas prior to being stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. They have six children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Their daughters were born in foreign countries (two in Germany, one in Turkey) and their three sons were born state-side on Army posts (Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Meade, Maryland).After Gordon retired from the United States Army, they remained in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.Phyllis was an avid gardener, birder and Washington Capitals hockey fan. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, games and the daily and Sunday crossword puzzles. She had wonderful wit and humor.Her one disappointment in life was to never see the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup.Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie Smith and Wallace Thorne of Upper Marlboro and her brothers Cecil and Robert Thorne. She is survived by her husband, Gordon L. Dorn (Upper Marlboro, MD) and children, Debra Dorn (Frederick, MD), Robin Dorn Bostic (Dannie-Gerradstown, WV), Ronald Dorn (Upper Marlboro, MD), Dwight Dorn (Lisa-Clinton, MD), Richard Dorn (College Park, MD and Crystal Dorn (Yucaipa, CA). She has two granddaughters, Jennifer Dorn Heard (Debra) and Stephanie Dorn (Dwight), and two great-grandchildren, Juniper and George Heard. She is also survived by her brother Wayne Thorne of Dunkirk, MD and Bessie Ann Morrison of Merrimac, New Hampshire, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was a beautiful wife, mother and grandmother. She was also a friend. We are going to miss her terribly.
