Maria Suyin Garcia-Sy passed away on November 30th, 2017, in the University of Maryland Medical Center.She is survived by her three children Kahlil, Josef and Theleah Opeda, her mother Aida Garcia-Sy, and her nine younger siblings.She was born Daraga, Albay in the Bicol region of the Philippines on the 26th of August, 1963 to Alfredo and Aida Garcia-Sy, where she grew up to value hard work and perseverance. She attended Bicol University from elementary up to college where she earned a Bachelor’s in English. She found a love in teaching and nurturing potential, having taught in many institutions, sharing her love and appreciation for English language and literature. She most recently taught at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School as an ESOL teacher. On top of teaching at schools, she enjoyed participating in the Primary (children’s Sunday School) Programs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she recently held a calling teaching children about God and Jesus Christ. Whether it was cooking Filipino food or dancing and singing to 70s lite rock, Suyin always had a spark that illuminated the lives of the people around her.
