John Michael Burns, a dedicated member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department who served as the President of the Corporation, and the Assistant Chief, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2017. A committed public servant, John also served as dispatcher for the Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications Center in Bowie, MD. He is survived by his loving fiancé of 21 years, Jennifer Duncan, who has supported John throughout his life; by his mother Charlene; his aunt Janice; his uncle AJ; his sister Michele; his niece Madison; as well as many cousins and Jennifer’s parents Linda and Jim.
John was a decorated firefighter with the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, and was awarded on numerous occasions for his valor and tenacious firefighting abilities. A skilled and highly competent 911 dispatcher, John could be counted on to properly and calmly send fire and EMS units to various emergencies. He constantly checked on those crews and provided them with a sense of security and the knowledge that someone cared for their well-being. That was John’s way.
We will be honoring John’s life on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Beall Funeral Home, located at 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, MD. There will be two viewings. The first viewing will be from 3:31pm until 5:30pm. The second viewing will be from 7:00pm until 9:00pm and will include a memorial service at 8:00pm.
On Tuesday, October 31,2017 there will be a procession from the funeral home in Bowie to Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Bladensburg, MD. To be part of this procession please arrive at Beall Funeral Home at 10:00am. The procession will then head to the Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, located at 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722, arriving at 12:00pm. There will be a graveside service at this time.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department at 7701 Landover Road, Landover, MD. 20785 in John’s name.
