He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Charlie was a cartographer and was employed with the United States Geological Survey for 34 years. He enlisted in the District of Columbia Air National Guard in February 1951 and retired as a Major after 20 years of service. Charlie loved to spend time with his family, especially watching his children and grandchildren in their many sports and activities. He was very proud he had such an active family who loved to spend time together. He also enjoyed spending time at their Deep Creek Lake house, heading down to the Carolina beaches for our “epic family beach trips,” doing puzzles for hours, woodworking and making things for his children, especially the doll houses and Hess Truck garages for all his grandchildren, as well as relaxing and “basking in the sun.” He was very proud that he served in the Air National Guard and was a very proud American. He could talk for hours and tell stories of his time he spent in the military. He loved to travel and especially enjoyed his trip he took to Italy with his son, Tom, to watch his granddaughter, Kaitlin, play soccer.
