A resident of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away on September 24, 2017. John was born in Washington, DC, to Anna Brooke Kelly and John Lewis Kelly. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from The Catholic University of America, a Master's degree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University, and a J.D. from American University Law School. He spent 22 years in the Army Medical Service Corps, eventually serving as the XO of the 12th Evac Hospital in Vietnam. After many years as the special council to the Chief of Staff of the Army, John retired as a colonel with numerous distinctions including a bronze star with cluster. He then went on to practice law for thirty years. His passions included farming, sailing, travel, and supporting the Marlborough Hunt Club. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marieanna Probst Kelly, their four children, and their ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Anna Kelly Helmly and Katherine Kelly Cawood. Viewing on September 28, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the family farm, Ashland. A burial mass on September 29, 2017 at St. Mary of the Assumption, 14908 Main Street, Upper Marlboro, MD at 11 a.m., reception to follow. Interment at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
