Helen Scabis

May 30, 1935 — September 10, 2017

Helen Scabis passed shortly after the family’s annual beach vacation on September 10, 2017 at the age of 82.  Born 1935 in Uniontown, PA, Helen grew up in a simple, loving household. She out-lived 9 brothers and sisters and her two parents, Michael and Anna Cmos. Growing up, she held jobs as a neighborhood baby sitter and a department store secretary. During her sophomore year of high school, she fell in love with the town’s handsome man, Joseph P. Scabis. She was a loving mother and homemaker, and would eventually be a transportation aid for kids with special needs for PG County Public Schools. She retired in December of 2002. Helen and Joe kept their relationship even when Joe went to the Korean War overseas. Once he returned, they were married and ready to start a new loving family. Together they had 3 boys, Joseph, Gary and John and 1 daughter, Darla. They began a new life in Lanham, Maryland and stayed there for the remainder of their lives. Her husband passed suddenly in August 2009, shortly after returning from the annual family vacation. She was devoted to the Catholic Church and more so her faith, attending masses every Sunday after long Saturday’s of sale shopping. At the forefront of her mind was always her in-laws, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Through her final days, her cherished in-laws were by her side; Tricia Scabis, Doug Gepert, and Will Haden. Her memories will be told by 7 grandsons and a granddaughter; Joey B. Scabis, Michael Scabis, Andy Gepert, Nick Scabis, Jonathon Scabis, Lucas Gepert, Jacob Scabis, Mia Scabis. Also her niece, Betty Colbert and great nephews, Jimmy and Ray Colbert. She was not only the matriarch of her family, she was called Mom by all. Her witty humor, loving smile, and unconditional love will be missed by so many. Friends, family, and loved ones can join in memories and celebration of her life at St. Matthias the Apostle Catholic Church (9475 Annapolis Road, Lanham, MD 20706), where she and Joe raised their family. Friday, September 15, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM. Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 10 to 11 AM. Funeral service on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11 AM, followed by a burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD. Repass will begin around 2 PM at the Gepert Residence, 8407 Cowan Ave., Bowie MD, 20720.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Matthias Church for a statue of the Blessed Mother in the Michael Archangel Memorial Chapel in her remembrance.
