Mary Lucile Duvall Spiller died on August 9, 2017, at her home in Bowie, Maryland. She was born on May 1, 1927, in Washington, D.C. She is survived by her husband, Herbert, a daughter, Martha (James) Jacobs, two grandsons, James and Matthew, and three great grandchildren, Ella, Taylor, and Paulina. She is also survived by her sister, Caroline Bond, and a brother, Charles Smith, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, John Paul Smith, her mother, Susan Duvall Smith, and her siblings, Susan Jane and John Paul. Mary Lu graduated from Marlboro High School and started her career at the Court House in Upper Marlboro, first working in the assessment office and then going on to the State’s Attorney’s office where she worked for over 40 years. She was very active her entire life in the Episcopal Church. During the 1960s she volunteered for the Red Cross at Malcomb Grow Hospital, Andrews Airforce Base as they received the wounded men from the Vietnam War. After retiring from the State’s Attorney’s Office in the 1980s she spent the next 20 years volunteering as a docent at the Washington National Cathedral. Mary Lu also spent time volunteering at Belair Mansion. She was an accomplished quilter, knitter and basket maker.
