William Desmond Walker, Jr.

November 9, 1934 — July 10, 2017

Of Upper Marlboro, MD passed away on July 10, 2017. Beloved husband of Joan Hammett Walker of 60 years, father of David Russell Walker and Willian Desmond Walker III, and grandfather of Nikolaus Zufall and Mathilde Walker. Preceded in death by his parents, William Desmond Walker and Nancy Roane Walker, and by his sister, Nancy Bouvier. Survived by brothers Aubrey “Doc” R. Walker and Edward S. Walker. Des Walker was born and raised on a tobacco and dairy farm and resided most of his life near Upper Marlboro. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Joan Walker, for more than 60 years, and they were frequently accompanied in recent years by their loyal Jack Russell, Conrad. Des attended Mullikin Elementary School in Mitchellville, Frederick Sasscer High School in Upper Marlboro, and the University of Maryland. He operated the W.D. Walker Excavating Company for more than 45 years. Des was a member of the Prince George’s Fish and Game Club, the Marlborough Hunt Club, and held several offices in the Upper Marlboro Lions Club. Following retirement, Joan and Des enjoyed many happy hours and lively discussions over breakfast with friends at the McDonalds in Upper Marlboro. They were active members in the WWG&R travel group for many years and enjoyed attending weekend dances, oyster roasts and church dinners throughout Southern Maryland. Des was an enthusiastic fan of local sports teams and enjoyed hunting and other outdoors sports, music (particularly Willie Nelson, classic country and gospel), and antique cars (especially his 1930 Model A Coupe). Family will receive friends on July 14, 2017 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt. 3 South), Bowie MD.  A Funeral Service will be held on July 15, 2017 at 11 am at Mt. Oak United Methodist Church, 14110 Mt. Oak Rd., Mitchellville, MD followed by interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Des’ memory may be made to Mt. Oak Church or the Upper Marlboro Lions Club.
