Albert Arthur Murphy, Sr., age 70, of Lothian, MD passed peacefully, surrounded by family, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD, on Sunday evening, June 11, 2017, after prolonged battles with multiple health issues. Mr. Murphy, born October 31, 1946 in Scranton, PA, was the third son of Gerald James Murphy, Sr. and Dorothy Ruth Murphy (nee: Schoonover). He grew up in Scranton, PA and Woodlyn, PA. He attended Ridley High School, in Ridley Township, PA, where he became a volunteer fireman for the Woodlyn Volunteer Fire Department.After leaving high school he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a machinist mate on the USS Boston (CAG-1) from 1965-1968. He later apprenticed as a pipefitter at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, and continued employment with the Department of Defense for the rest of his career. In addition to PNSY, he also worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in VA, Mare Island Naval Shipyard in CA, and at White Oak Naval Surface Warfare Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital in MD. He retired in April 2015 after 38 total years with the Department of Defense.In addition to working hard, Mr. Murphy also played hard. He is remembered as the life of every party, famous for his way with children and for an amazing sense of humor, an ever-changing array of crazy hats, Hawaiian shirt Fridays, crocheting, water gun fights, and balloon animals. He was a man of many talents, and had kindness and heart a mile wide. With a character of proportion to match his spirit, he is loved and respected by all who enjoyed the blessing of his presence in their lives. We carry the light of his memory with us forever. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gerald Murphy, Jr. (Jane, living); a sister, Mary Jane Anderson; and two daughters, Ann Murphy and Beverly Berner. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Barbara Murphy; two prior wives, Betty Seth and Virginia Lauber; five siblings: Russell Murphy, Patricia Murphy, Dorothy O’Melia, Robert Murphy (Catherine), and James Murphy (Sandy); nine children: Albert Murphy, Jr. (Chris), Wesley Murphy, Clair Murphy, Carrie Cross (Dan), Emma Yulick (Joe), Virginia McLarty (John), Theodore “Tetje” Berner (Bonnie), Robert Tucker (Chrissy), and Richard Tucker (Betty); one foster daughter: Angela Kennedy; 24 grandchildren; 11-3/4 great-grandchildren; 22 nieces and nephews; a large extended family, and countless friends. He was a member of the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.In lieu of flowers, Mr. Murphy’s family requests donations be made to the Hackerman-Patz House at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
