DAVID RIDLEY WATKINS David Ridley Watkins, 76, of Cheverly, MD passed away on May 19, 2017, with unwavering faith and fortitude. Known for his outgoing, friendly nature and playful smile, he met life's final challenge with calm courage and strength of mind, all the while never losing his well-known sense of humor. He was a loving husband to Candice Watkins for nearly 40 years; devoted father to his five children, David Watkins (Susan), Michael Watkins (Mary), Jeffrey Watkins, Meghan Watkins (Brian), and Jessica Watkins Jeane (Charles); and Granddad to 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was born in Washington, DC to the late Herman Watkins and Charlotte Ridley Watkins. He is preceded in death by his brother Douglas Watkins. David served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon honorable discharge, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park. He was a high school math teacher for over 30 years. A life-long athlete, David, known as a "player's umpire," umpired over 7,000 baseball and softball games, which included NCAA Division I baseball games and Class A Professional Minor League games. He was an umpire for the GWSUA for over 25 years. He was inducted into the Greater Washington Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch Softball Halls of Fame. David has been a member of the Cheverly United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. As a pillar of the church and community, he has served in various leadership roles throughout the years. Most notably, he was one of three men that lead the Church's involvement in the winter "warm nights" homeless shelter program and helped create the Cheverly United Methodist Men, to which he has served as President since its creation in 2012. He was also the Vice President of the United Methodist Men of the Greater Washington District. David was an Olympic torchbearer for the 96' U.S. Olympic Games, chosen for recognition as a community hero. He spent his life giving his time and compassion to those in need, be it a stranger on the street, family member, or a friend in the community. He never discriminated or hesitated to lend a helping hand and will always be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, generosity, and, of course, his larger than life, fun-loving nature. He is truly one-of-a-kind. Legends never die. Family will receive friends at the Cheverly United Methodist Church on Friday, May 26, 2017, to honor David's memory beginning at 10am. A funeral service will be held at 11am and a celebration of his life will be held immediately thereafter. A service at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
