Harry David Cyphers passed away May 20, 2017. Known by "Dave" to his family and friends, he is survived by his wife Joan Cyphers, his children David, Amy and Stephen Cyphers, his brother Walter, his sister Janet and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Margaret. Dave Cyphers was raised in Warrior Run, Pennsylvania, he served in the Navy 1954-58, and met his wife Joan in Washington, DC while on leave. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1963 and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University in 1973. Dave and Joan settled in Bowie in 1967 to raise their family. He spent his 32-year career working for NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, most notably working on the mission to repair the Hubble space telescope. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting and refinishing antiques, sailing, kayaking, biking and spending time with his family. In retirement, he and Joan enjoyed traveling the U.S. and abroad, and he became committed to developing hiking and biking trails in Bowie and across the state. He was the Maryland State Coordinator for the American Discovery Trail for over 15 years and earned an Outstanding Senior Citizen award in 1997 for his work from the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Discovery Trail or Hospice of the Chesapeake in the name of Dave & Joan Cyphers. Interment will take place 2pm Saturday, June 3, 2017, Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville. A Celebration of Life will be held at the home for family and friends immediately following.
