Lucretia Gordon Harris, on May 8, 2017, received her call home and graciously accepted, as she transitioned being good with God. Lucretia lived a full and abundant life and cherished all her final moments with those closest to her. Lucretia’s journey began in 1960, born to Frances Gordon and William H. Gordon Jr. As the first daughter after two sons, Lucretia was unique in her own skin. After high school graduation in 1978, she briefly attended college before obtaining a job at First Bank in which she met one of her best friends, Janice Sullivan. She welcomed her daughter Tamara in 1980. Shortly after she began working for the State of Connecticut’s Department of Transportation. During that time she also volunteered for Yale University Bright Beginnings. Oftentimes, Lucretia could be found “road-dogging” up and down the East Coast and once across the country with her cousin Eric. She loved to fish, Porgies and Bluefish were her thing. Growing up in Branford, she grew to love the beach and loved to travel to a variety of beaches, especially in the Caribbean. When Tamara was little, Lucretia learned how to sew from Aunt Sue and began to sew clothes for both her and Tamara and a few of Tamara’s dolls. After several years working for the Department of Transportation, Lucretia transferred to Southern Connecticut State University. She was famous for saying, probably handed down from her father, “If there’s a will there’s a way,” and after 20 years she retired from the State of Connecticut and moved to Maryland. Shortly after moving to Maryland, she married her Earthly King, Dean Harris on 3/23/2002. In Maryland she became a realtor, followed by obtaining her broker’s license and opened her own business RX Realty, named after her grandchildren Raina and Xavier. Lucretia’s spirit always drew her to giving back to the community and she found comfort in volunteering for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) and Bowie Youth and Family Services. Through CASA she mentored and thoroughly supported Kiera “KiKI” Edwards. Kiera, once a shy teenager, after meeting Lucretia has blossomed into a successful college graduate. While in Maryland she also bonded with her sister cousin, Valerie and supported her godchildren (Jalen and Marriah) in all their endeavors, dance, music, and academic success. In October 2015, Lucretia was diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC that had already metastasized. Lucretia lived under the premise that “God ordered her steps.” Though the news was devastating and hard to handle in the beginning, she followed the plan that God laid for her. Although this is often a time of sadness, she doesn’t want that to last too long, reflect and celebrate her life and make good choices so you too can follow your ordered steps. Lucretia is predeceased by her father, William H. Gordon, Jr, Aunt Susie Gordon and Uncle Johnny Gordon, as well as grandparents, great-grandparents, and great aunts and uncles. She is survived by her mother, Frances Gordon, husband, Dean C. Harris, daughter, Tamara Gordon, grandchildren (butters) Raina and Xavier Gordon, brother William Gordon III, brother Russell Gordon (Michelle), sister Kimberly Rippy (Phillip), niece (sweetness) Ruth “Ruthie”, nephew Brady, godchildren Brittany Miller Joyce, Marriah and Jalen Boyd, aunts Mary Nelson, Betty Frazier, Ernestine Miller, uncle Russell Gordon and a host of cousins and friends across the country.
