Charles Edward Renner, Jr. of Bowie, Maryland, age 87, died on March 25th, 2017 at Crofton Care and Rehabilitation Center where he went after breaking his hip in December. Charlie is survived by his daughter Sheree and husband Jim Ruhl of Bowie, MD, son Kevin and wife Joan Renner of Crofton, MD, grandsons Kellen and Evan Ruhl and Tyler and Hunter Renner, and sister Edythe and her husband Bill Pifer of Berryville, VA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne McDonald Renner, parents Charles Edward Renner, Sr., and Marie Fleming Renner and his sisters Patsy Renner and Georgie Lloyd. Charlie was born on March 9, 1930 in Charles Town, West Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering and accepted a job with the Bureau of Mines at Mt. Weather. His future wife Anne was the person who fingerprinted him on his first day of work! He was drafted into the Army, where he went to Officer’s Candidate School and served as Second Lieutenant until 1954 when he was honorably discharged. He went back to work at Mt. Weather until 1958 when he went to work for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Berryville, VA., then transferring to Andrews AFB in 1960. In 1961 he went to work for the General Services Administration in Washington DC, where he would stay until his retirement in December of 1990. Charlie and Anne were married on April 8th, 1956, a marriage that endured 44 years until Anne’s death in January 2000. He was an athlete until his later years, and a beloved coach of champion Youth Baseball, Softball, Soccer and Basketball teams, Women’s and Men’s Softball teams and Senior Softball teams in Bowie. He turned the coaching duties over to others in recent years, but still hosted weekly Friday Happy Hours with his Senior Softball players. A Bowie resident since 1962, Charlie was an Elder at Christian Community Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed gardening, sports- especially his beloved Hokies and Redskins, and most of all his family. Family will receive friends at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Hwy, Bowie, MD on Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:30am at Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Dr. Bowie, MD, followed by burial service at Crownsville Veteran’s Cemetery at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: American Heart Association; Virginia Tech Athletic Fund or Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
