Mary C. Fogarty

December 23, 1930 — January 1, 2017

Mary Cahouet Fogarty died peacefully on January 1, 2017, surrounded by loved ones and grateful for a life full of blessings.  She was 86 years old. Born to Ralph H. and Mary (née Jordan) Cahouet, Mary grew up in Cohasset, MA where she enjoyed sailing with her four brothers and playing field hockey. She attended Georgetown Visitation in 1949, and graduated from Bradford Junior College in 1952.  She enjoyed work as a medical secretary in the Orthopedics Department at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1962, she married the wonderful Richard Fogarty of Newport, RI, and they moved to Washington, DC and then Bowie, MD to start a family.  They were devoted to their five children—Frances, Margaret, Catherine, Michael and Anne.  When Richard died of cancer in 1980, Mary found steadfast support and encouragement from family, neighbors and friends, including the remarkable community at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mary was gracious and generous with her time and energy, which she gave to her parish as a lector, Eucharistic minister and Sodality member. She also served as PTA president at Rockledge Elementary School.  She was abundant with kindness, to which her many friends and family will attest having received her frequent cards, gifts and notes of appreciation and remembrance. Most of Mary’s 86 years were spent in remarkably good health, but the past six months were challenging as she coped with complications from congestive heart failure.  She has been predeceased by three of her brothers—Rev. Ralph Cahouet, OP (Washington, DC), James Cahouet (Princeton, NJ) and John Cahouet (Santa Fe, NM)—and a nephew David Cahouet (Bernardsville, NJ).  She is survived by her dear brother Frank and his wife Anne Cahouet (Sewickley, PA), her sister-in-law Jean Cahouet (Princeton, NJ), her brother-in-law Joseph Fogarty (Fairfax, VA), and her sister-in-law Joan Fogarty (Burke, VA). Mary’s legacy of love and kindness lives on in her thirteen grandchildren, the source of immeasurable pride and fulfillment.  She will be dearly missed by many. A public viewing will be held on Thursday, January 5 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Beall Funeral Home in Bowie.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 pm on Friday, January 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in the chapel. Interment, Sacred Heart Cemetery.
