Charles Philip Werner

Phil Werner was born in Easton, Pennsylvania and grew up in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, spending summers at Lake Naomi in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He was the son of Charles Stephen Werner and Ethel Mary McKenna Werner.  Phil attended Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1954. In 1955, he married Mary Hurt Peery, of Grundy, Virginia. Phil was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army in 1954, served three years on active duty in the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in Munich, Germany. He then began a career as an Army Intelligence civilian, while continuing to serve in the US Army Reserves. As a Reservist, he commanded the 5th Psychological Group and did a three year active-duty tour as 7th Corps Assistant Chief of Staff for Civil-Military Affairs, giving him a chance to mingle, drink beer and speak German with his local counterparts. He retired as a Colonel in 1983. Phil had a 36-year civilian career with the Department of the Army, and was stationed in Munich, Stuttgart and Berlin, Germany, California, Pennsylvania and Maryland, and he traveled throughout much of the world. He attended language school in Monterey, California, adding Russian and Ukrainian to his list of languages. Phil's last assignment took him back to Munich, where he led the efforts of the US Army Europe Land Liaison Officers and working closely with the German Intelligence community. His civilian retirement was in 1992.Phil was a loving husband and father, who liked nothing better than spending time with family and friends. He and Mary Hurt camped and traveled throughout Europe, and once they had children, brought them along on the adventures. Phil enjoyed sailing, traveling, hiking and woodworking. Phil is survived by his wife and five children: Krista Marie married to Larry Wenz of St. Augustine, FL, Karla Jean, married to Jeffrey Moyer of Austin, TX, Ingrid Margaret, married to Nolan McCoy of Crofton, MD, James Philip Werner, married to Catherine Baillio of Louisville, KY and Kathryn Ann, married to Christopher Pleffner of Crofton, MD. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and his 13 grandchildren; Jacob Wenz, James and Davis Hay, Laurie Moyer and Anna Moyer Nivens, Lauren McCoy and Madeleine McCoy Holloway, Julia and Anne Werner, Polly Raley Shaeffer, Steven Raley, Kaitlin and Amanda Pleffner.
