Harold Groom was born in Washington, DC to Johanna and Harold Groom. Harold had one sister, Alice who preceded him in death. Harold was active in sports to include football, basketball and swimming. He earned numerous medals in each sport. Harold was also one of three teenagers selected to be Commissioner for the Day in Washington, DC. Harold attended Gonzaga High School briefly and eventually attended and graduated from Eastern High School. Harold joined the Merchant Marines and eventually joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years and was a member of the air/sea rescue unit. While stationed in Newfoundland he met and married the love of his life, Joyce Greene. Harold and Joyce were married over 50 years until her untimely passing in 2006. That union garnered five children, Jerry, Tommy, Chris, Mary, and Ann Marie. Harold began working at Western Electric Phone Company and worked there through many mergers until his retirement. Harold enjoyed playing bingo, going to breakfast, reading and watching the Nats, the Redskins and the Capitals. Harold also enjoyed working part-time on the parking lot at the Showplace Arena. Harold had one daughter-in-law Kerrie Groom, four grandchildren, Nichole, Sarah, Joey and Hannah and three great grandchildren.
