Donald W. Hollway

July 20, 1929 — July 19, 2016

Hollway, Donald Wilson, d. July 19, 2016, Crofton, MD of natural causes after a lifetime of service to his country, his community, and his family.  A lifelong explorer and searcher of knowledge, Don was born July 20, 1929 in York, PA to Donald E. and Mary R. Hollway.  He was an Eagle Scout and hitchhiked across the United States at age 16.  He attended Gettysburg College, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Reserve Officers Training Corps.  After graduation with a BA in Chemistry, he accepted a commission in the United States Air Force, serving with distinction for 30 years until his retirement as a Colonel in 1980.  During his early years in the Air Force, Don attended graduate school in Meteorology at New York University, then earned an MA from Michigan State University.  A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he received multiple commendations and medals, including a Bronze Star, and held senior leadership positions at the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade.After his retirement from military service, Don embarked on a second career as an educator, teaching biology at Anne Arundel Community College for twenty years.  He moved to Crofton in 1983, and when not teaching spent his time bird watching in Chincoteague and Florida, singing in community choruses (Chesapeake Chorale and Annapolis Chorale) and finishing New York Times crosswords or reading a book while watching Orioles and Nationals games with the TV sound off and the radio on.  Don volunteered at Patuxent Wildlife Sanctuary and the Crofton Library for many years.Survived by his loving family:  adoring wife, Lynn; children Mary, John, and Andrew; stepchildren Joanna and Cory; grandchildren Elizabeth, Matthew, Payton, Maggie, Ellie, Delaney, Edward, and Izzy; great-grandson Silas; sister-in-law Buzz, and nephews Don and Mike and their families.He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.Don/Dad/Granddad:  We were blessed to know you, and our lives were better because you were in it.  Your broad knowledge about everything, and your sense of humor will be missed every day.
