Sylvia Ann (Marcheski) Gross, 76, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 14, 2015. Sylvia was born on April 5, 1939 in Shamokin, PA to the late Edward R. Marcheski and Jane Marie (Seebold). After graduating from Shamokin High School (1957) Sylvia would receive her Bachelor’s Degree in education from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania (1961) and later her Master’s in Education from Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. Sylvia spent the first 5 years of her 30+ year long career in education in Arlington, VA as a speech teacher. The remainder of her career would be spent as a classroom teacher in the Prince Georges County, Maryland school district; educating 4th, 5th, and 6th graders first at Ardmore Elementary in Landover, MD, then at Montpelier Elementary in Laurel, MD and finally at Yorktown Elementary in Bowie, MD. Sylvia was also a 43 year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bowie, MD; she taught CCD for more than 20 years, served on the parish counsel, was a Ladies Sodality member and a member of the Ladies Altar Society. Sylvia was an outgoing, vivacious, helpful, funny, creative and always caring woman who will be loved and missed. Sylvia loved cooking, sewing and entertaining. She also especially loved spending time at the beach in Margate, New Jersey with her family and grandchildren. Sylvia is preceded in death by her loving husband Hugh E. Gross (July 2015), her parents and 1 brother Edward R. Marcheski, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Holly Morrison and her husband David and Elizabeth Bankston and her husband Greg; 6 grandchildren, John “Jack”, Katie, Cullen, Mac, Aidan, and Sean Thomas; 3 brothers, John Marcheski and wife Sue, Joseph Marcheski, and Thomas Marcheski and wife Nelia; 3 sisters, Jane Reynolds and husband Reds, Mary O’Day and husband Mike, and Joyce Martini and husband Kyle. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service and reception for Sylvia will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 2 pm at Park Meadows 5901 W. 107th St. Overland Park, KS 66207. At a date to be determined a visitation will be held at Beall Funeral Home in Bowie, MD followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Chapel and interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bowie, MD.
