Gerald "Jerry" Stubbs, a retired branch chief with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Diane Stubbs (nee Scott), 68, a retired lawyer with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), were killed Saturday, July 18, in a plane crash near Cody, Wyoming. The couple was vacationing with Diane's brother, Donald Scott, and friend, Joyce Bartoo, who were also lost in the crash. Jerry was born on May 27, 1946 in Long Beach, California. He was the son of a United States Air Force Colonel and grew up in various locations around the United States. Jerry graduated from Suitland High School, in Suitland, MD in 1964. He held a Master's Degree in biology and worked at the EPA from 1976 to 2006, serving as branch chief for most of his career. At the time of his death, he was near completion of a history of his father's World War II experiences in the Pacific. Diane had planned to illustrate the book. Diane was born on May 12, 1947 in Joliet, Illinois. She was the daughter of an English teacher and grew up in Plainfield, Illinois. Diane graduated from Plainfield High School in 1965. She worked at the DOE from 1973 to 2006. Diane received her law degree from George Washington University in 1981. Jerry and Diane met while students at Knox College, in Galesburg, Illinois, and married in 1967. They were inseparable and their interests were diverse. Jerry loved the outdoors and passed his fascination with animals and nature on to his son and grandchildren. Diane was an excellent cook and entertainer. She was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting antiques. In recent years, they traveled extensively with friends and family. Diane and Jerry lived in Annapolis, Maryland and Bethany Beach, Delaware. They are survived by their son, Chris, his wife Chantel and three grandchildren, Gabrielle, Emma and Scottie. Jerry is also survived by two brothers, Max and Don Stubbs. Diane is also survived by her sister, Beth Scott Axelrod. Visitation will be held at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy., Bowie, MD 20715 on Thursday, July 30, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Jerry and Diane's Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, July 31 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthews Methodist Church,Bowie, MD 20715. Interment will follow immediately at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD 21035.
