Veronica A. Kennedy - 97, originally of Belle Harbor, New York, died on March 14, 2015, surrounded by family and loved ones at home in Crofton, Maryland. Mrs. Kennedy grew up in Manhattan, NY where she attended and graduated Cathedral High School. She then worked as a telephone operator until joining the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. While in the corps, she received her nursing degree from Misericordia Hospital Nursing School. Following the war, she met and married Matt Kennedy and they moved to Belle Harbor where they raised their family on Beach 127th Street. She resided in Belle Harbor for over 60 years before moving to Crofton to be close to family. After 8 children, Mrs. Kennedy returned to school and received an advanced nursing degree from Jersey City State College. She worked as a nurse and then nursing administration for many years. When she retired in her mid-seventies, she was working at a Nursing Home facility where she was older than many of the patients. Veronica enjoyed living near the beach, traveling, watching the evening news, reading historical fiction and mysteries, and listening to a wide array of music, including opera, traditional Irish music and Perry Como. She is preceded in death by her sister Margaret Mac Guire Egan, brother Eugene Mac Guire, her eldest son Patrick, and husband Matthew. She is survived by her children - Veronica, Mary, John, Ellen, Matthew, Clare, and Kevin; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. An Irish woman through and through with a strong constitution and a never quit attitude to the end.
