John "Spec" Hans On August 22, 2014 "Pop" passed away peacefully after 99 amazing years. He was a proud native Washingtonian growing up on Capital Hill, later living in Crofton, Odenton and Severna Park. John began his career at the age of 16 driving for the Secretary of Agriculture. His career spanned service with the Atomic Energy Commission and Argonne National Labs. John served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a member of the 2nd Division participating in the Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa Campaigns and was part of the Japanese occupation, arriving at Nagasaki within a month of the atomic bombing. Pop's life was that of quiet service to his country, God, and family and made everyone he touched better. He never met a person that wasn't a friend, a meal that wasn't the best he ever tasted, a glass of wine he wouldn't praise as wonderful or tell a story that he hadn't already told a hundred times before. He was an avid golfer and teed up well into his early nineties. Nothing could keep John from marrying his sweetheart, Catherine Thompson on October 22, 1937. Always the Father to take us to games, the beach and White Point, he was much loved by Carol (Robert) Reddersen, Suzanne (Richard) Burbidge, John Hans, Christine Moore, Thomas (Michelle) Hans, Richard (Judi) Hans, and Michael (Kim) Hans. Also survived by his 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. We are teary eyed but astounded at a wonderful life so full and well lived. That's you Pop - in a word...wonderful. Viewings will be from 3 to 5pm and from 7 to 9pm on August 29th at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, MD. Mass will be at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 1800 Seton Dr. Crofton, MD 21114, Saturday, August 30th at 11am. Interment, Crownsville Veterans Cemetery on Friday, September 26th at 10:45am.
