Unexpectedly in his sleep, on Wednesday morning, May 7, 2014, John E. McInerney passed away at his home in Largo, MD. John was a loving son and devoted husband, caring brother of five, and friend to countless many. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 28, 1940, John was preceded in death by his beloved Irish-immigrant parents, Michael and Margaret McInerney, as well as by his brothers, Patrick and Michael. His is survived by his loving wife, Louise Verret, his sister, Kathleen, and his younger brothers, James and Joseph. John is further survived by three nephews, Jason, Michael, and James, and three grand-nephews, Jason, Jeremy, and Justin. John's life was full of personal and civic accomplishments despite a 53-year struggle with Type-I diabetes. A retired AARP administrator, John was also a Catholic seminarian, Congressional aide, and high school history teacher. He served as president of the College Station Home Owners Association. A gifted speaker, fund raiser, and natural organizer, John was devoted to the Holy Family Church of Mitchellville, MD, where he served as Eucharistic Minister. The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), and the Knights of Columbus were the focus of his boundless energy. He served as president of the AOH John F. Kennedy Division and of the AOH District of Columbia State Board. His work included the Irish Brigade Monument Project at Antietam and the restoration of Gettysburg Battlefield memorials. The Co-Founder of the "Barry Gate" Project at the United States Naval Academy, John passed away three days prior to the dedication of the John Barry Memorial and Plazathe culmination of 7-years of focused effort.
