Dirk Schulze

December 11, 1960 — February 1, 2014

Dirk Schulze, of Huntingtown, MD, formerly of Bowie, MD died suddenly February 1, 2014. Beloved husband of Karen Schulze; loving father of Emily Jeanne, Tara Elizabeth, Marley, Jack, and Whitey; son of the late Volney Schulze and Jessie Van Vliet; brother of Shelley Hill (Butch) and Christy Kern (Dennis); son-in-law of Richard Tow. Dirk grew up in the Tulip Grove section of Bowie and graduated from Bowie High School in 1978. He was on the BHS golf team and enjoyed several sports growing up and playing for Bowie Boys and Girls Club. After high school, he attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida from which he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He was also a member of the golf team. After graduation, Dirk started work with Carefirst Blue Cross/Blue Shield and worked there for 32 years. In 1990, he married Karen Tow, also a Bowie native, and they had two beautiful daughters: Emily, born in 1992, and Tara, born in 1996. Dirk had a passionate personality that enabled him to be very successful in both his work and his hobbies. He was known as a competitive golfer in the DC/MD/VA amateur golf circuit and loved the competition and camaraderie of the game. His greatest bragging right was winning the Club Championship at Bowie Golf Course at least once in each of the past five decades, starting in the 1970's and including a victory just recently in 2013. His devotion to his family was unparalleled. Coaching his girls in their sports, attending school functions and traveling for family vacations were always a priority to him. His pets were equally important to him and his devotion to Marley, Jack and Whitey brought him great joy. Dirk also knew the value of friendships and has treasured his many friends from his Bowie and Flagler days, and also from his work arena. His enthusiasm for music was apparent. He enjoyed making CD's of assorted music for friends, coworkers and family and was always interested to hear people's "Top 5 Bands." His "Top 5" changed all the time - but everyone knew Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones were always on his list. He was a man full of love for life, family and friends, celebrating greatness and inspiring others to do the same.
