Elma Catherine Scrivo

January 30, 1922 — November 3, 2013

ELMA C. SCRIVO BOWIE, Md. - Elma Catherine Scrivo (nee Shulick) a longtime Lorain resident who enjoyed dancing, skating and gardening, died Sunday, Nov. 3 at Larkin-Chase Nursing Home. She was 91years old. Always light on her feet, Mrs. Scrivo danced her way through life. Inspired by child movie star Shirley Temple, she took tap dancing lessons as a girl and later enjoyed jitterbugging to the Big Bands of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. She was always the first on the dance floor and among the last to leave. She roller-skated, square-danced and line-danced well until her 80s. Mrs. Scrivo also enjoyed music throughout her life. A natural musician, she taught herself to play her grandmother's pump organ as a child and continued playing into her golden years. She sang and loved to harmonize with friends and family. For many years, she sang alto in the choir at St Peter's Catholic Church, where she had been a member from 1964 until this August when moved to Maryland to be closer to her daughter. Known for her green thumb, Mrs. Scrivo was an avid gardener. Every summer, friends could count on sampling some of her tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, onions, cantaloupe and strawberries. Friends and family will also remember her as an animal-lover, roller-coaster fan and a warm and caring person who loved to laugh. Born in Blacklick, Pa. on Jan. 30, 1922, Mrs. Scrivo graduated from Ken High School in 1940 and later the Pittsburgh Training School, where she learned shorthand, typing and office skills. She worked as a secretary Westinghouse in Pittsburgh from 1942 to 1950. Later, she worked as a salesclerk for 17 years at the May Company, then at Sheffield Center, retiring in 1989. Mrs. Scrivo was preceded in death in 1997 by her ex-husband, Bill Scrivo, a former managing editor of The Journal in Lorain, Ohio. They divorced in 1976. Her parents, Steve and Mary Shulick also preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister Margaret (Anthony) Gaeta of Clearfield, Pa., daughter and son-in-law Karen Lee Scrivo and Kenneth Shilling, her grandson, Kelson Shilling-Scrivo of Glenn Dale, Md. and many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in her name to New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, 3500 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio, 44053 or Heartland Hospice, 12304 Baltimore Ave., Suite A, Beltsville, Md., 20705.
