Elaine Sebastian Reed was born and raised in [the Bronx] New York, New York. She was the youngest of four children of Ethel and Leonard Sebastian, both originally from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Elaine attended and graduated from school in New York City. After meeting and marrying Ernest K. Reed in August 1945, Elaine later became the mother of one child, Ernest K. Reed, Jr., and stayed a homemaker for 15 years to raise him; act as den mother of his Cub Scouts; and a Summer Bible School teacher at the St. Mark's Methodist Church at which she was a prestigious life-long member. Elaine later worked for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), First Union Health Center, for 27 years before retiring in 1989. Though she worked diligently and enjoyed her co-workers, Elaine loved to take cruises with friends and travel to various parts of the country to visit her son and extended family...which has grown to two granddaughters, two great grandsons, and a great granddaughter.
