Sweet, Harold (Hal) E., former music teacher and church choir director, died on May 26, 2013 at his home. He was 79. Mr. Sweet led a very active life. He retired from teaching music at Samuel Ogle Middle School in 1987. He directed the Chancel Choir at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Bowie, Maryland for 23 years. He loved golf, tennis, bridge, reading, dancing with his wife and watching John Wayne movies. He was born in Potsdam, New York on January 2, 1934, to Lillian and Harold W. Sweet. He served in the U.S. Army, was graduated from the University of Maryland, and did graduate work at Bowie State University. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Suzanne; three children, Tom Emsweller (Mary) of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Becky Kang (Yong) of Crofton, Maryland and Jan Stallings (Gene) of Crofton; six grandchildren, Kathleen, Wesley and Will Kang; Andrew, Molly and Maggie Stallings; one sister, Betty Miles of Shadyside, Maryland; one brother, Donald Sweet of Lincoln, California A memorial service will be held at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 14900 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Maryland 20715 on Saturday, June 1 at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be private at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank their extended families and friends for all the love and support they provided during Hal's illness. He loved life and will be missed deeply.
