Nick Palumbo, of Bowie, Maryland died on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 6:45 a.m. in the loving arms of his family at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland. Nick was born on August 01, 1928 in Giovinazzo, Italy, to Paolo and Nicoletta Palumbo. Nick learned the art of stone carving from his father, Paolo Palumbo, around the age of twelve years old and worked as a stone carver in his hometown of Giovinazzo until 1949, when at the age of 21 he emigrated from Italy to the United States of America. Nick lived in White Plains, New York, where he held three jobs. He worked full time in a Chevrolet automobile factory, while also working part time jobs driving a taxi cab and working in a grocery store on the weekends. Nick received his United States citizenship in 1953. Nick returned to his stone carving roots when he moved to Maryland and began working for McLeod and Rumbergh Stone Masonry. In 1973, Nick accepted a position as a marble mason at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and worked there until 1990, when he retired. Nick also worked with his brother Vincent at the National Cathedral on occasion. In the Spring of 1964, Nick met Luigia Santi of Hillcrest Heights, Maryland at the Annual Villa Rosa Italian Festival. Nick and Luigia were married on October 02, 1964 and lived in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland for the next 34 years. They raised a son (Paolo) and daughter (Teresa). In 1997 Nick, Luigia and Teresa moved to Bowie, Maryland. Nick enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, cooking and eating. Nick is survived by his wife Luigia, son Paolo Palumbo and wife Lori, daughter Teresa Palumbo, daughter Maria Lehotsky and husband Pete, sister Giulia Florita, granchildren Matthew Dlabich, Lisa Esele and husband James, Tanya Jobs and husband David, great grandchildren Isaiah and Olivia Jobs, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation for friends and family will be Friday, March 22, 2013 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway (Rt. 3 South), Bowie, MD 20715. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 16501 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD 20715. Interment immediately following mass at Resurrection 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD 20735.
