Martha Madeline Hammett Welsh was born at Providence Hospital in Washington D.C. on February 4, 1963. Martha was a loving mother, devoted sister and faithful friend. She was raised in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland and graduated from Holy Family Catholic School. Martha attended La Reine High School in Suitland, Maryland. She attended Prince Georges Community College, Largo and University of Maryland, College Park graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree in Arts and Humanities. Martha was a warranty specialist and account representative for major motor companies and automotive dealerships. Later, Martha was a medical billing clerk for a private medical practice. She also was a caregiver for the elderly and infirmed. In her early years, Martha was involved in her church and school helping her parents with the decorations and flowers for the church. Martha was interested in sewing, taking private classes as well as learning from her grandmother. She designed and made several dresses. Martha was interested in dance and performance. This was an interest that led to her participation in synchronized swimming. She competed through out the D.C. and northern Virginia Area. On many occasions Martha herself had assisted with the costumes and staging of events. Following this, Martha became a lifeguard working at pools on Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. From high school on, Martha was an artist, sketching and working in lithographs, oil painting and sculpture. She was an actress who performed in productions at Prince Georges Community College and also worked on costumes. Martha was a follower of dance and the performing arts on stage and film. Martha was also well known as a follower of fashion. She will be remembered for her gorgeous dresses and stunning hats as well as her ability to coordinate any outfit with any accessory. Martha was a loving mother to her son. She took good care of him always and loved him very much. She shared with him her outgoing spirit, her zest for life and her love of cats. Martha was a devoted sister to her large family. Growing up, she took care of her younger brothers and sisters and helped her mother around the house. She was always available to drive her siblings to sports practices, musical lessons and social events. At family gatherings she could faithfully be seen towards the end donning an apron and helping out with the clean up and the dishes. Martha was a faithful friend. She was generous and giving and always looked out for those in need. She passed away and was born to eternal life on March 14, 2013. Martha was loved by many and will be deeply missed. Martha was predeceased by her brother Albert Frances Hammett. Martha is survived by her son, Casey W. Hammett of Dundalk, MD. Martha is also survived by her parents, Francis X. Hammett and Carolyn Hammett of Solomons, MD. Martha is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Thomas Hammett of Brandon FL, Carolyn Hammett of Takoma Park, MD, David Hammett of Chantilly, VA, F. Janet Kleponis of Lusby, MD, Mark A. Hammett of Bowie, MD and Joan Giavasis of Alexandria, VA. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00pm at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie, MD 20715, 301-805-5544.
