Katie "Big Red" Stascavage was born Catherine McKenna in New York, NY, to Henry and Frances McKenna. She was an only child who attended grade school through college in the Big Apple. One of her friends played matchmaker and she met and fell in love with her best friend of 53 years, Len Stascavage. They married on June 13th, 1959 and proceeded to get busy. Eleven years later, they were forming the lives of eight children. When the youngest was ready for kindergarten, Katie became a third grade teacher at St. Pius X School. She was Mrs. 3A for over 20 years. She and Len started a sacred date night tradition--every Saturday they would dress up and go out to dinner. She loved her date night with her bestie, and the two of them became regular fixtures first at Paul's on the South River and then at Christopher's. Quite a few bartenders now know how to make a dry Rob Roy now! Summers wouldn't be complete without a week at the beach house at Nags Head with the children and grandchildren, and of course the pelicans (she loved those pelicans!). Rare was the day when you wouldn't find a crossword puzzle, a pencil and her reading glasses on the counter--oh, and the crossword puzzle dictionary (yes, mom, it IS cheating!). One thing I know is that from the day she brought her first born into this world, there wasn't a thing she wouldn't sacrifice without complaint for her family. Go ahead, look up "mother" and "wife" in the dictionary. Yep, that's her picture there.
