Barbara Ann Haass,83, died peacefully June 10 in Annapolis with her daughter at her side, only a month after discovering she had advanced pancreatic cancer. She was born on August 23, 1928 in Anawalt, WV and grew up in Princeton, WV. Just a few days after graduating from Princeton High School in 1946, she boarded a train for Washington, DC to begin her career as a civil service employee in the Department of the Navy. 38 years later, she retired as the head assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel for Officer Planning. First married to Paul J. Carnell in 1948, she was widowed in 1978 and remarried in 1981 to George Haass, who died in 1996. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Juliet Carnell; three brothers, Bennie R., Philip C. and John Thomas Cooper; step-sons and daughters, Curtis G. Carnell, Barbara Spruill, Ronald Haass, Cynthia Greenan, and Robert Haass; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 15 and 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday June 16 with funeral service at 11 a.m. at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy. (Rte. 3 South), Bowie. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville.
