Melvin L. Hackman was born in 1927 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the only child of Lee Roy and Hattie Hackman. He joined the US Marine Corps. at 18 years of age and served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. For over 50 years, Mel was a member and Past Master of the Washington-Lafayette Masonic Lodge #176, a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite. An electronics engineer for the U.S. Department of the Navy, he lived with his family in Bowie, Maryland and worked in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1973. His hobbies were flying, stamp and coin collecting, and listening to good music. He resided in Bowie until his death at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife Shirley of Bowie, his daughters and sons-in-law Beth and Louis Barbier of Columbia, MD. and Lynn and Ray Ketchaver of Centreville, VA, his granddaughters Lauren Jacob of San Francisco, CA, Melissa Jacob of Rockville, MD, Rae Willis, and her husband Brian and their children Kate and Claire of Rock Hill, SC. Memorial services are pending. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
