Janet Duke Beury

Janet "Jan" Beury, nee Janet Woods Duke, 70, a long-time resident of Crofton, Maryland passed away suddenly on April 20, 2012. She was born February 23, 1942 in Cumberland, Maryland, and was the daughter of the late Edgar Thrush Duke and Yvette (Sterne) Duke. She married Ronald "Ron" Beury of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, on October 29, 1966 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, Maryland. Jan is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Ron Beury; daughter, Diane Beury Mason and son-in-law, Mark Mason (Clarksville, Maryland); grandson, Thomas Mason; granddaughter, Laura Mason; sister, Linda Putnam and brother-in-law, Roger Putnam (Akron, Ohio); brother John Duke and sister-in-law Kathy Duke (Broomfield, Colorado); brother-in-law Harold "Bud" Beury and sister-in-law Sandra Beury (Savannah, Georgia); along with several nieces and nephews. Jan loved her family and enjoyed traveling, attending local theatre productions, Scouting, photography, crafts, and technology. She was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and her Master of Education degree from Kent State University. She taught Social Studies and English for four years at Annapolis Junior High School, Annapolis, Maryland and four years at Samuel Ogle Junior High School in Bowie, Maryland. After spending time at home following the birth of her daughter, she began a successful real estate career in Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties which lasted 30 years. She was a top real estate producer, held many advanced real estate designations, and received the RE/MAX Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards. She retired in 2004. The family will receive friends at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy., (Rte. 3 South), Bowie, Maryland, on Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 6 to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1800 Seton Drive, Crofton, Maryland, on Friday April 27, 2012 at 10am, immediately followed by interment at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, 4806 Seton Drive, Baltimore, Maryland 21215/www.gscm.org and reference Troop 58 or Boy Scouts of America, Baltimore Area Council, 701 Wyman Park Drive, Baltimore, Maryland 21211/www.baltimorebsa.org and reference Troop 702.
