Sgt. Jospeh A. Eberhard, Sr. (Retired 1973) Internal Affairs Detective Metropolitan Police Department Joseph A. Eberhard, Sr. December 17, 1938 to September 20, 2011. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired as a Detective Sergeant from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Bowie, daughter Kim and son-in-law John Jones of Waldorf, son Joe Eberhard Jr and daughter-in-law Anne of Bowie, 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. The Funeral was held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Cresthill Baptist Church, Bowie, MD. Joe was born on December 17, 1938 in Buffalo, New York to Nicholas and Mildred Eberhard. He was the youngest of four sons. He served in Korea as a member of the United States Army. He moved to Washington DC in 1961, where he joined the Metropolitan Police Department. Joe met Carolyn in May of 1964 and they were married a year later in May of 1965. Joe and Carolyn moved to Bowie in 1967, where they raised their family. They were blessed with two lovely children, Kim and Joe, Jr. Joe retired from the Metropolitan Police Department as a Detective Sergeant in May of 1973. He enjoyed being a football and baseball coach for the Bowie Boys and Girls Club. He served as one of the Youth Directors at Cresthill Baptist Church and was a role model for many of the young men that came into his life. Many people were attracted to Joe and viewed him as their "dad," that was just the type of man he was. He always had wise words for those who needed his advice, and was always willing to give a hug to those who needed a hug. He and Carolyn also enjoyed participating in the Senior Adult Ministry at their church.
