Alan R. Jones

Died on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 of pancreatic cancer. He was born November 13, 1931 in Hickory, NC, attended Hickory City schools and graduated from Belmont Abbey Prep School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force before receiving a B.A. degree from Belmont Abbey College in 1956 and a JuD. from Catholic University Law School in 1962. He was admitted to the Maryland State Bar in 1962 and was employed at the U.S. Census Bureau from 1957 to 1990 where he directed a program of research and statistics on state and local criminal justice systems for the U.S. Department of Justice. He was a long-time resident of Bowie, Maryland. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Williams Jones (Bootsie), and was the beloved father of Alan Jones (Barbara), Paul Jones (Jill), Jeanette Frick (Andrew), Jane Miller (Jake), and Mary Ann Messenger (John). He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Julia Mary Jones-Nolan (Bernie); Also survived by brothers Jerry (Leora) and Tom and sister Evelyn, and predeceased by sister Claire. He is grandfather to 17 grandchildren and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at the family-owned BEALL FUNERAL HOME, 6512 NW Crain Hwy. (Rte. 3 South), Bowie, MD on Friday, July 29, 2011 from 6 to 9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 14720 Annapolis Rd., Bowie, MD on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 11am. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Alan's name to the Abbey Family Fund of Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, NC 28012.
