James Oscar Johnson, age 84, quietly passed away May 17, 2011 at his home in Lanham, MD with family members at his side. James is a US Navy veteran of WWII, serving his county aboard the USS Albany, USS Macon, and USS Wisconsin. While with the Battleship USS Wisconsin in Tokyo harbor, he witnessed the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Helen R. Johnson. He is survived by his devoted children Marilyn and Bill Cardoza of Beverly, N.J., Thomas Johnson of Lanham, MD, James Johnson of Davidsonville, MD, and Susie and Mike Blackwell of Annapolis, MD; grandchildren, James Blackwell and wife Sonia of Gambrills, MD, Jamie Johnson and Michael Johnson of Davidsonville, MD, Kelly Scaldferri of Fayetteville, NC and Nathan Von Gohren of TX, Deborah Chace of Rehobeth, MA, Sandra Giles of Swansea,MA, Billie Ricci of East Providence, RI, Kathy O Connell of Bridgewater, MA, Steve Whyte of Hebron, MD and great-grandchildren Patrick Johnson, Kaitlin Blackwell and Raegan Blackwell, Jessica Cardoza, Rebecca Rothfeld, Niomi Giles, Christopher Cardoza, Lindsay Manning, Meaghan Nadeau, Alyssa Avila, Aaron Avila, Beau Whyte and great-great grandchildren Brenden Cardoza, Raiden Nadeau, Michael Cardoza, Madelyn Stanley, Quinton Scaldferri, Joseph Johnson, Melonie Von Gohren, Ryan Von Gohren, Brandon Von Gohren, Nikki Von Gohren, Alyssa Von Gohren and Adam Von Gohren; sister Lillian Payne of Hyattsville, MD, Brother-in-law and friend Bill Greene of Jessup, MD, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, May 20, 2011 from 2-4pm and 7pm-9pm at the Beall Funeral Home at 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt. 3, South) in Bowie, MD, where a Funeral will be held on Saturday May 21, 2011 at 10am. Burial to follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel, MD. He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis DeSales Johnson and Lucy Mattingly Johnson, and siblings Keaton Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, Francis Johnson, Cecelia Gutherie, Agnes Welch, Margaret Buckler, Helen Cannon, Alfred Johnson, and Joseph Johnson.
