Helen Elizabeth Stemple Peck,84, of Bowie, Md. passed away March 14, 2011 in West River, Md. She was born January 13, 1927 in Hambilton, West Virginia, daughter of Fairfax Cline Stemple and Amanda Jane Dumire. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Carl Stemple, Paul Stemple, Catherine Asher, and Dorothy Mateer. Helen is survived by her brother, Ross Stemple of Suitland, Maryland and by three children David Michael Peck of Kingwood, Texas, Frank Marshall Peck of West River, Maryland, and Alan Wells Peck of Centreville, Virginia. Helen graduated from Parsons High School and attended Davis Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. She was married to Melvin H. Peck, Jr. at Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church, January 31, 1948. Helen was a devoted mother and loving friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Among her many attributes were her love of animals and her volunteer work After moving to Washington, D.C., Helen started working at the F.B.I. until her marriage took her to Europe. After returning from Europe, she worked at American University before joining the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, MD. She then moved to the Office of Management and Budget. After retiring from the government, she continued to work with the American Statistical Association and the Counsel of Professional Association on Federal Statistics. In her community, she enjoyed working with the various neighborhood projects and volunteering at the Watkins Regional Park Nature Center in Largo, Maryland. She attended the United Parish of Bowie where she was an active member. A Memorial service will be held March 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Parish of Bowie, 2515 Mitchellville Rd. Bowie, Md. 20716. Burial will be March 26 at the Cemetery in Aurora, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the SPCA/HS of Prince George's County PO Box 925 Bowie, MD 20718 .
