Joan Ann McHugh, 70, of Crofton, died February 3rd at Anne Arundel Medical Center of lung cancer. She was born September 23, 1940 in Donora, Pa to the late Mickal and Susan Madar. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Joseph B. McHugh; two children, Suzanne Strong of Crofton, Md and Joseph P. McHugh of Baltimore, Md; son-in-law, Gerald Strong; and two grand-daughters, Ava and Hailey Strong. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, and all three siblings who have passed within the past ten months; Mary O'Connor, Michael Madar, and John Madar. She was very devoted to her family, and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Before her retirement in 2003, Joan worked as a medical insurance specialist and office administrator for several different hospitals and medical groups. Her granddaughters have been a huge part of her life for the past four years, being their daycare provider has brought her a lot of joy. Joan was an avid reader, who could be found at the local library at least once a week, leaving with an armful of books which she somehow finished before the next trip. She enjoyed quilting, but really enjoyed giving the quilts away to family and friends. Joan took a tremendous amount of pride in her home, both inside and out. Taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens took up a lot of her weekends, but her love of gardening kept her working hard even when the temperature was high. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, February 7th at 11am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 16501 Annapolis Rd, Bowie. Interment, Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, Md , 21401.
