Captain Arthur Francis Shires, USCG (Ret.), 64, died January 27, 2011 at his home in Crofton, MD after a brief battle with cancer. He was born September 20, 1946, in Monaca, PA to the late Peter and Katherine Shires. He is survived by his wife Lana Mengel Shires, son Mark and wife Alison (West Chester, PA), son Michael (Baltimore, MD), brother-in-law George Bluemling (Cranberry, PA), nephew David Bluemling (Wexford, PA), and niece Kathy Rattenbury (Odenton, MD). Art was preceded in death by his sister Marlene Bluemling. Art graduated from Monaca High School in 1964 and the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1968. He proudly served for 28 years. He earned a Masters of Science in Management from the Naval Post Graduate School (Monterey, CA) in 1974. Upon retirement from the USCG Art taught mathematics in the Baltimore City Schools (1995-2002) and Anne Arundel County Public Schools (2002-2008). Art was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, baseball fan, and enjoyed traveling with his wife. Family will receive friends at the family-owned BEALL FUNERAL HOME, 6512 NW Crain Hwy., (Rte. 3 South), Bowie, MD on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 12:00pm until the Funeral Service at 2:00pm. Interment, Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 9:00am. Please arrive at the Administration Building at 8:30am.
