Laurel "Jean" Unnewehr (nee Affleck) died peacefully December 5, 2010 at Collington Senior Living Community in Mitchelleville, MD after several months of declining health . She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Lewis "Lew" E. Unnewehr, her son, Dana Carl, and her brother D. Craig Affleck. Survivors are her children David Lewis of Bowie MD, Laura Lee Millar of Grass Valley CA, Janet Ivy Tupper of Cheverly MD and Chris Emory of Buckeye AZ; her sister Joan Ryan of Long Beach CA; ten grandchildren: Chris Conway, Becky Conway, Zac Conway, Kyle Unnewehr, Kevin Unnewehr, Erin Millar, Patrick Millar, Sean Millar, Janelle Tupper , Kelton Tupper and two great grandchildren, Rollie and Malachai. Jean was born in Hammond Indiana in 1926. She attended Drake University where she obtained a degree in music education. She was a life-long violinist, playing in the string sections of several city symphonies. Her true passion was teaching violin and at any one time in the 1970s and 1980s she taught more than 30 middle and high school students each week in her private studio in Birmingham, Michigan. She also encouraged her children and grandchildren in their musical pursuits. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Sorority since her college days and a member of the PEO Sisterhood since 1972. Jean and Lew also lived in Valparaiso IN, Springfield PA, Palos Verdes CA, Michigan City IN, Lima OH, Lakeside OH, and Ormond Beach FL. They moved to Maryland in 2006. A memorial service will be held February 5th at 1:00 at Washington Community Fellowship Church in Washington DC. Internment will be in Oakland MD.
