On August 20, 2010 Noman Benedict Alt, age 83 and September 13, 2010 Mary Elizabeth Alt, age 84 died at the Mandrin Hospice House, after suffering short illnesses. They were residents of Gambrills, MD for 5 years, formerly of Bowie, MD for over 20 years. Norman Benedict Alt was born December 28, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. After attending college, Norman was employed by the US Border Patrol and the US Department of Immigration as a Criminal Investigator. He served in the Army during WWII, in the Philippines. Norman enjoyed caving with the Baltimore Grotto, flying, and snorkeling. He was a member of the US Border Patrol Alumni and the Baltimore Grotto. Norman is predeceased by his sister Beverly Simon of New York City. Mary Elizabeth Alt was born on June 2, 1926 in Baltimore, MD. She was a paralegal, employed by the Justice Department. Liz enjoyed cooking, gardening, water color painting, and playing Bridge. She was a proud member of The Red Hats and the Guild of Bowie Artists. Liz is survived by her siblings Harry Paul Jones of PA and Dorothy Kistner of Baltimore, MD. Avid campers, Norman and Liz were married on April 19, 1952 in New York City. They were preceded in death by their infant son, Steven Alt, in 1957, and their son-in-law William Shugrue, in 2008. Norman and Liz are survived by their loving daughters, Lisa Alt of Kingston, NY and Amy Alt-Shugrue of Bowie, MD and their grandchildren, Max, Dakota, Destiny, and Emma Rose. A Memorial Gathering will be held at Comfort Inn, Bowie; date/time to be announced.
