Terry McMullen was born in Fall River, Massachusetts to Patricia and John F. McMullen where his father worked as a pressman at the Fall River Herald News. He moved to Bowie, Maryland with his sisters Tina and Carron. In Bowie, his family grew to include his sisters Lisa and Tracy, and his brother, Sean. He attended St. Pius X Regional School and loved playing music, especially the guitar and the bass. His love of music led him to become a part of "A Small Circle of Friends" folk group which remained an important part of his life for many years, playing events all around Bowie. He attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., like his three sons after him, where his aptitude in mathematics garnered him an award to further his studies at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. After graduating from Gonzaga in 1972, he attended the University of Maryland where he attained bachelor's degrees in mathematics and zoology in 1975. In the summer of 1975, he married his high school sweetheart Diane Burgett. His lifelong dream of becoming a doctor led him and Diane to L'Aquila, Italy to begin his medical training. They returned to Bowie in 1981 and he graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1983. While in Bowie, he and Diane raised three boys: Daniel, J.P., and Matthew. He loved spending time with his sons whether following their pursuits as Boy Scouts or taking them on "mystery rides" which could be as near as the Friendly's down the street or as far as Ocean City, three hours away. Although he never lost his love for the study of medicine, eventually he was unable to continue practicing internal medicine because of the progression of the MS he had been diagnosed with in 1986. He passed away due to respiratory complications caused by the MS on June 20th, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.
