Lucile Mosley Johnson

Lucile M. Johnson, of Bowie, passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Villa Rosa Nursing Home in Mitchellville, Maryland. She was born April 7, 1923 in Houston, Texas. She is loved and cherished as someone always willing to help others. As a wife, mother, teacher, anti-poverty worker, civil rights advocate, and social worker, she fought hard for equal rights and equal opportunities for all. Lucile Johnson graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas and from Prairie View A&M, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics. She completed some graduate work in social work and counseling at Texas Southern University in Houston. She married Rufus G. Johnson Jr. of Longview Texas on August 16, 1944. She later had a successful career with Houston public schools, teaching mathematics at Ryan Junior High School and Jack Yates Senior High School. Lucile moved with her family to Dallas, Texas, in 1967, where she worked with Planned Parenthood. The family moved to Bowie, Maryland, in 1970 where she began her career with Prince George's County Government. She headed the Citizens Against Rural Poverty organization and ended her career with the county's government as Director of Personnel. She later worked for the Displaced Homemaker's Program of the Maryland State Department of Education before retiring. Lucile Johnson is survived by her children, Ruth Mubita and her husband, Aaron; Anne Moultrie and her husband, Ralph; Dawn Turner and her husband, Ronald; and Lynn Davie; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her brother, James Mosley, II and her son-in-law, Gregory Davie. A Gathering will be held at the family owned BEALL FUNERAL HOME, 6512 NW Crain Hwy., (Rte. 3 South), Bowie, MD on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 10:30am until the Memorial Service at 11:00am. Interment private.
