Barbara Jean Shanks, 70, a 40 year resident of Bowie, Maryland passed away at Spa Creek Nursing home in Annapolis on January 28, 2010 after a long and valiant battle against breast cancer. She was born on September 25, 1939 in Spangler, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Frank P. Shutty, now deceased, and Nellie Shutty, of Crofton, Maryland. Barbara attended both Catholic and public schools in Pennsylvania, graduating from Hastings-Elder High School in 1957. She then graduated from Washington School of Medical Techniques in 1959 and upon completing her board exams, became a registered Medical Technologist. She was immediately employed by Prince George's General Hospital as a medical laboratory technician, where she worked until accompanying her husband on an active military tour. After years of dedicating herself to her family, Barbara completed emergency medical technology training and again entered the workforce, this time as a medical assistant in several local medical offices. She retired in 1999, dedicating herself once again to family, friends, and hobbies. Barbara is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry L. Shanks, two sons, Lawrence R. Shanks of Pt. St. Lucie, Florida and Brian A. Shanks of Southern, Maryland. Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Belinda Shanks, two grandsons, Christopher and Jacob, brother, Richard F. Shutty of Linthicum, Maryland, and several nieces and nephews. She is sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Susan G.
