E. Clayton Averitt, 83, a resident of Bowie for 43 years, died September 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.He was born November 17, 1925 in Vander, North Carolina. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber during WWII. Following military service, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He entered Federal service as an Investigator in 1952 with the US Civil Service Commission and retired in 1984 as Chief of Investigations, US Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C.He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Florence Winfree. They married in 1948, and with their 3 children lived in Raleigh, Dallas, and suburban Washington during his career. After retiring, they maintained their residence in Bowie and travelled throughout the US. He was a member of the Annapolis Elks Lodge for 25 years.He is survived by his daughter, Jane Ellen Bieberich, of Harwood, Maryland, and son Scott Averitt of Alameda, California, brother Robert Averitt of Greensboro, NC, brother William Averitt of Pensacola, FL and sister Louise Hanlon of Cocoa Beach, FL, and three grandchildren. His oldest son Brad died in 2003.Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, October 6 at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie. Funeral services will also be held at Beall Funeral Home at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, October 7, with burial at 3 pm at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetary, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland.
