Alton L. Beard

December 9, 1933 — March 11, 2025

Lanham

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Alton Lee Beard at home on March 11, 2025. Born in Washington, DC in 1933, Al grew up in the vibrant city that shaped his early years. He graduated from McKinley Tech High School in 1953, shortly before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served his country during the Korean War.

Upon returning home, Al met the love of his life, Donna Grace Manzon. They were united in marriage in 1957, embarking on a beautiful journey together that would last for 68 wonderful years. Al and Donna built a loving family, raising three children: Kevin, Dawn, and Gary. Their family continued to grow, bringing joy with five grandchildren—Alex, Evan, Nicholas, Jackson, and Samuel—and three great-grandchildren—Benjamin, Noah, and Rivi.

Al dedicated a significant portion of his career to public service, beginning in small business before transitioning to a role as a printer in the federal government. After 25 years of dedicated service, he retired from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1993.

A man of many passions, Al had a deep love for baseball and later, softball. He became a well-known figure in the Prince George’s County area, celebrated for his coaching prowess and leading numerous boys baseball teams to championship victories. He enjoyed the fellowship with his “softball men” and relished their company. In these endeavors, his kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for others were hallmarks of his character.

Al took great joy in traveling throughout the United States, creating lasting memories with his loved ones.

Alton Lee Beard will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the warmth he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and a spirit that touched many lives. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Al is survived by his loving wife, Donna Grace, of Lanham, MD, and children, Kevin (Donna) of Hagerstown, MD, Dawn Wathen (Forest) of Owings, MD, and Gary (Michelle) of Brunswick, GA, and their families.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at University Baptist Church, 3515 Campus Drive, College Park, MD 20740. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to a veteran-focused organization like
