On the night of August 27, 2023 at approximately 11:54PM, Alvin Joseph Biagas, Jr. who was lovingly known as Al, passed away after a long battle with cancer at the Hospice of Charles County Facility in Waldorf, Maryland. He was 75 years old. Alvin Biagas was born on September 8, 1947 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was the first born of fourteen children of Veda Theresa and Alvin Joseph Biagas, Sr. Alvin graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Lake Charles, LA. He attended Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. Al received an Accounting Degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC.
On February 1, 1969 Alvin married his high school sweetheart, Ida Mae Toussaint, shortly after moving to the DC area and from this union, they were blessed with 2 daughters, Kimberly Neshe’ and Courtney Michele.
For many years, Alvin worked for C&P Telephone Company[now Verizon] in the Engineering Department. He was responsible for system planning, construction cost budgeting and contract management. In January of 1991, Alvin founded AVA Electric Company, Inc. Over the years and as the company grew, several brothers, sisters, and his own children worked for AVA which is a testament to his love for family and his willingness to help and provide for so many people.
Alvin has served as a Project Executive on a wide range of projects over the past fifty-five years for both C&P Telephone Company [now Verizon] and in management of AVA Electric Company, Inc. As CEO of AVA Electric Company, Inc., Alvin actively participated in the management of all of AVA’s projects. With Alvin’s wide range of experience in new construction, renovations, and infrastructure work, he brought an extensive knowledge to general construction.
Alvin was a philanthropist, and had an unwavering desire to promote and support the welfare of others. He was known for helping family, friends, employees, and strangers. We will never know the extent of Al’s generosity. He was always willing to share his knowledge of business with many of his siblings that ultimately led them to become successful business owners.
Al was a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). He served as a board member on The Prince George’s County Electrical Board, Dimensions Healthcare System, DC Chamber of Commerce, and the Prince George’s County American Red Cross.
Alvin was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Ida Mae Biagas, his parents, Alvin and Veda Biagas, two brothers, Edwin David Biagas, Sr. and Virgil Gerard Biagas, Sister in Law, Glenda Broussard Biagas, and Brother in Law, Hiram DuRousseau.
Al lived a full life of service committed to his work ethic, piousness, family, friends, and faith. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved companion, Patricia McPherson, two daughters, Kimberly and Courtney Biagas, his granddaughters, Ashlyn and Jazlyn McIntyre, Morgan and Olivia Lewis, his sisters, Jeanette DuRousseau, Darlene Biagas, Bernadell (Will) Carter, Evette (Ed or Phillip) Gradney, Connie (Keith) Thomas, Jacinta (Gary) Poullard; his brothers, Terrell (Cassie) Biagas, Mark (Melinda) Biagas, Randy (Sharon) Biagas, Omar (LaDonnys) Biagas, John (Tricia) Biagas; Sisters in Law, Lillie Biagas and Eva Biagas along with several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives.
