Ann Davis Sophocleus

June 10, 1937 — October 23, 2020

Evangeline (Ann) Davis Sophocleus of Ellicott City, MD passed away on October 23, 2020 at the age of 83 after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sophoclis (Soph), of 62 years. She is survived by her daughter Diana and her husband Christos Motsiopoulos; her son John and his wife Theresa; grandchildren Alexander, Kelly, Emmanuel and Natalia Motsiopoulos; her sister Jennie (Yanoula) Johns of Richmond, VA, and many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.

Ann was the daughter of Greek immigrants, the late Peter and Angeline Davis (Mpairaktaris). She was born in Raleigh, NC, where she and her eleven siblings grew up. Ann was the second to the youngest. Her father died when she was 12, so most of her memories were of her mother and siblings. Ann recounted a story of her infancy when Archbishop Athenagoras came to their house and her mother asked the Archbishop to bless one of her children with a beautiful voice so that child may sing the hymns of the church. It was often said the Archbishop blessed all the Davis children with beautiful voices, but Ann had the voice of an angel.

Ann graduated from Hugh Morrison High School in 1955. After high school, she attended Peace College in Raleigh graduating in 1957 with an AA degree in Business and a minor in Music. She worked for the Social Security Administration (SSA) where she was part of the SSA Chorus and the SSA Gospel Choir (All God’s Children).

After retirement Ann expanded her music career and produced/cut two music CD’s – “My Heart Sings” (1999) and In Spirit (2009).  She also performed with the Baltimore Symphony Choir, the Fabulous 50’s Players, and the Baltimore County Senior Swing Band at Senior Expo’s and retirement centers. Ann was crowned Ms. Senior Maryland in 2000 and went on to compete for Ms. Senior USA in Las Vegas.  Ann was devoted to all her family and was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, and a staple of the Cathedral Choir. She donated her time and talent and performed many benefit concerts for various Annunciation church ministries – including GOYA, Choir, and the Senior Center.

“Well done good and faithful servant ...enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Matthew 25:23)…you have “fought the good fight, you have finished the race, and you have kept the faith” (Timothy 4:7-8)
